![]() ![]() For decades, these years were widely seen as the nadir in the saga of American democracy. Reconstruction refers to the period, generally dated from 1865 to 1877, during which the nation’s laws and Constitution were rewritten to guarantee the basic rights of the former slaves, and biracial governments came to power throughout the defeated Confederacy. ![]() But that era has long been misunderstood. Issues that agitate American politics today - access to citizenship and voting rights, the relative powers of the national and state governments, the relationship between political and economic democracy, the proper response to terrorism - all of these are Reconstruction questions. This is unfortunate, for if any historical period deserves the label “relevant,” it is Reconstruction. Preoccupied with the challenges of our own time, Americans will probably devote little attention to the sesquicentennial of Reconstruction, the turbulent era that followed the conflict. ![]() ![]() Lee at Appomattox Court House, 150 years ago next month, effectively ended the Civil War. ![]()

![]() His character is particularly compelling! The bad guys were layered, multi-faceted, and evil. I did love the side characters though! I wished that Ben Bradley would have actually been in the book more. I need my leading guys to be human too! So if they are chasing the wrong man there needs to be consequences. The thing that brought down the character rating for I am Pilgrim is too many things went his way even when he screwed up (which I wouldn't have known but it was pointed out in all the details). In fact, all I need is for them to be extremely good at their job which Scott (Pilgrim) is. Worth it but a bit brutal.Character Thoughts: Let me state up front: In thrillers I don't need to "like" or "identify" with the main character. ![]() That made I am Pilgrim a bit of a slog to read. I had to switch over from the audiobook to the book because I kept missing important parts buried in details. The only problem for me was the massive amounts of detail slowed down the pacing and at times took me out of the story. I didn't quite figure out what was going on and that alone made the book worth reading. Read/Listened for Review (Simon and Schuster)Overall Rating : 3.50Character Rating: 3.25Story Rating : 3.75Audio Rating : 3.50First Thought when Finished: I am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes was a wonderful thriller bogged down by to many details.Story Thoughts: I really loved the case at the center of I am Pilgrim! I thought it was exciting, edgy, topical, and gripping. ![]() ![]() ![]() In a two-tonne car measuring more than two metres wide and 5.3 metres long, the 82kW 4.1-litre straight-eight didn’t quite deliver on performance expectations (a larger-capacity 4.3-litre engine existed elsewhere in the Buick range), but the experience was wonderfully smooth and quiet. ![]() Images of warm-night cruising along some shoreside boulevard with the top down become almost irresistible. ![]() ![]() Take a look at this 1948 Buick Super Eight convertible (advertised as a 1946 model but identified as otherwise on the original body-by-Fisher build plate) offered for sale through carsales for $65,000.
